Cost of future care

A claimant that suffers an injury requiring them to incur costs for their future medical care will be entitled to compensation for these costs. Such awards are meant to provide arrangements for assistance, equipment, and other facilities and treatments reasonably necessary to preserve a claimant’s health and to make their post-accident life more endurable. Examples of costs that future care awards may be made in respect to include the cost of physiotherapy, chiropractic treatments, massage therapy, medications, child care, psychological counseling, alterations to a claimant’s home such as the installation of wheelchair ramps, in-home care services, and future surgeries. Depending on the severity of a claimant’s injuries, the services that may be needed to preserve their health can be quite extensive, and the amount awarded for future care claims thus can sometimes be significant.
